Using directories for website traffic

If you are using any search engines or directories for website traffic, don’t count on much. The big three send about 99% of search traffic out, leaving 1% to all the other directories.

It is still important that you add your site to these directories and search engines. Most of them have some kind of PR rank. And we all know the big guy likes links from places like that.

Do not go the automatic submitter route. You never know where your links are going. They could be going to;

Some sites receive these bulk submissions, and disregard them as spam.

No. Never use automated software. Do every thing by hand. I know this sounds like the hard way of doing this, but the right way, is usually the harder way. It is better that you visit each site, and look around for yourself. Only list with sites that you feel your product (site) fits in with.

If you came across a directory for construction equipment, your ebook on making money on ebay would not fit. Chances are that you would not even be listed. So not only would you be wasting the directories staff’s time, you would be wasting your own. So if your product/service/site doesn’t fit, move on.

Some directories will ask you for a reciprocal link. You should place it on your site before you submit your site. I have a “Where we can be found” page for just this purpose.

And finally, some of these sites will want to charge you for the listings. Remember, these sites are only responsible for 1% of the searches. So don’t waste your money.
