You are going to find that linking is going to be work. Personally myself I spend 2 hrs a day working on it. And I plan for this campaign to last 6 months. Yes linking is that important to website traffic. It greatly affects your search engine standings as well as provides good advertising, on other quality sites.
The first tools I use are the search engines. Just pop in your keywords and see what pops out. You have to visit each site. Some you will find to be direct competitors. Just ignore these sites for now. What you want are the sites with product closely related to yours, but not the same. Something complementary.
On the websites you feel you could exchange links with to build up your website traffic, you must look around for three things.
Next you want to check their keywords. Try to use them to put anchor text to their link on one of your pages.
Next you contact the Webmaster. You tell them why you are contacting them. A short description of your site, and the URL where they can find their link. Now you wait for them to contact you in return.
The second way to find pages to exchange links with is to go to your competitor’s site and see who is link with them. You’ll find a neat little tool for doing this at

You may even steal some of their website traffic.
Look over the websites he is linked to. If you find some you like, contact them as above.
The third way is to develop relationships with sites of a similar theme. If they have a newsletter, subscribe to it. Once you have a feel for what kind of articles they come out with, Contact them and ask if they take submissions. If they do, submit an article. Don’t submit more than once a month.
The fourth way to build website traffic is to use a third party service. Such as;
