There are a lot of articles telling you where to promote for the best website traffic. It is just as important to know where not to promote. Places where promoting your website is either, a total waste of time, or could actual hurt your website standings with the search engines.
1/ FFA or free for all sites.
With FFA you put your link on their page and you get a ton of emails back for your trouble. On top of that, they are ineffective. Hardly anyone ever visits them, most submitters use software to send their link to hundreds of such sites at once. Your link is not on the page for very long, with hundreds of other marketers put their links on the page, yours soon fall off the bottom.
2/ Link farms
Beware when you exchange links with other webmasters. Some will put your link on a page with hundreds of other links. Also a lot of directories are also just link farms. Your link is permanently on the page, but search engines hate these, and may penalize you for being there.
3/ Paid search engine submission services.
You could pay for your search engine submission, but why bother. If you are doing every thing else right, such as back links, the spider will find you. It may take a little longer, but is so much cheaper.
4/Paid hit sites
The problem with paid hit sites is that the people hitting your site are not very targeted. Also, when they show your site it is not a full-page view.
5/Paid Per Click Ads
At this point you are probably not ready for this. You really have to know what you are doing to make this work. Other wise you will just be blowing through a pile of money. Maybe later when you have a killer ad, and a killer splash page, both that have proven themselves, you might reconsider.
6/Submitter Software
Again not a good idea. It submittes to hundreds of sites. Most you probably don’t want to be listed with. Some of the directories see this as spam, and that could hurt you.
7/Banner Exchanges
Banners have a very low click through rate. With banner exchanges your banner is rotated on other sites, in accordance with how many banners have been viewed on your site. If you really must use banners on your site, contact the other Webmaster directly, and exchange static banners. At least then you would have a link for the search engines to follow
8/Anything that sounds to good to be true usually is.
