What are FFA sites, exchanges, and link farms? And what do they have to do with website traffic? I am glad you asked. Linking to many of the above will not help you; in fact they may hurt you with the search engines.
A FFA or free for all link site is just what it sounds like. Anyone can and does link to them. There is no relevance to your website or any other website. Many of the submissions are done with automatic software, so no one ever sees your link. They have so many submissions that your link may only last hours, or minutes before it is pushed off the bottom of the page.
An exchange is where you go to “ exchange links”. Beware the ones that sell you links. Again they may be putting your link on FFA sites, or other link heavy sites. Places where again your link is worth nothing
Even with a proper link site, you still have to watch yourself. The other Webmaster can fail to give you a recipical link, or he may bury your link so deep, that the search engines, . Or visitors will never find them.
The best way to use reciprocal links is to do it manually. If you see a site you like, contact the Webmaster directly. Always be polite. Let the Webmaster exactly what you propose. If he is willing to exchange links, then exchange links. Always check up after 30 days to make sure the Webmaster has posted your link, and where he said he would.
Directories, link farms and website traffic.
A directory is a classified list of websites. It includes a short description of the website along with the link. A real person usually audits a directory. A link farm is just what it sounds like. It is a site filled with links, links and more links. Being listed on one can actually cause you harm with the search engines.
It is important that you do your submitting manually. That way you can have a look at the directory before deciding to submit. Your submission will also be taken more serious.
Search engines and website traffic.
We have all seen the ad. “We will submit your site to hundreds of search engines. Well that is hogwash. There are not that many sites. So many of the so-called search engines will turn out to be …..You guessed it…..link farms.
Always submit to the search engines manually. Not only do you know what you are getting yourself into, I am sure the search engines appreciate not being spammed. So in closing what have we learnt. FFA sites and link farms are to be avoided. Directories and search engines should be submitted to manually.
